Setting up the Folders tab

How do I share certain Folders on my PC?
1) Click on the Manage tab

2) Click on the Setup folders tab link

3) In the 'Name the virtual directory' box, choose a name for the folder (e.g., Photos)

4) Click the Browse button to select a file in the folder you wish to share. Even though you will share the entire folder, choose a single file from that folder and press the OK button.

5) Press the Share button to share the file or folder.

How do I display Folders in photo-album or slide-show format?
1) When users visit your site, they can first click on the 'Folders' tab

2) They can click on a folder-name (e.g., 'Photos')

3) If more than 50% of the files in the folder are photos ("JPG" files), BadBlue will present the folder in slide-show format "automatically".

If a slide-show does not start automatically when you view a folder (say, because there are not enough photos in the folder), just click on the Slideshow icon.

4) To switch to Photo Album - or "thumbnail" - format (at right), just click on the Camera icon.

You can control whether a folder is displayed automatically in slideshow, thumbnail or listing format. See below for details.

5) To switch to the file details format (at right), just click on the File Details icon.

You can control whether a folder is displayed automatically in slideshow, thumbnail or listing format. See below for details.

How do I control whether a folder appears in Slideshow or Album format?
Click on Manage >> Setup folders tab and scroll to the bottom of the page where the "Auto photo album view" setting appears.

Auto-display Slideshow format: If more than 50% of the files in the folder are JPG's (e.g., photos), BadBlue will automatically present the folder in slideshow format. This is the default setting.

Auto-display Thumbnails example: To have the folder displayed in Thumbnail format when at least 90% of the files are JPG's, change settings to those at right and press the Save Changes button.
Auto-display File Details example: To have the folder displayed in "File Details" format (i.e., a list of files) with no automatic display of slides or albums, change settings to those at right and press the Save Changes button.

How do I allow people to upload files to me?
1) Click on the Manage tab and then on the Setup folders tab link

2) In the 'Name the virtual directory' box, type the word uploads

3) Next to the 'Select any file in the folder' box, press the 'Browse' button and choose any file in the folder that is to receive uploaded files

4) Press the Add virtual directory button to create the Uploads folder

Uploads will now be permitted to your PC. Please note the following:

4  For security reasons, it is necessary to password-protect the uploads folder; this will allow any user to upload files to you, but only visitors with a valid user-name and password will be able to browse the Uploads folder. We highly recommend that the Uploads folder is password- protected to prevent 'trojan-horse' attacks against your computer.

4  Users can now upload files to your computer by pressing the Folders tab and then pressing the Upload a file... button

4  For more details on uploads, see the Uploads Help Center page

How do I password-protect folders?
1) Click on the Manage tab

2) Click on the Define users link

3) Create one or more user accounts, then press the Manage tab again

4) Click on the Password-protect files link

5) Choose the folder that you wish to protect and press the Require user authentication button (you can leave the user box blank or specify individual users); repeat for each virtual directory that you wish to password-protect

How do I prevent users from seeing folders they don't have access to?
Use the following steps to hide folders to which the user does not have access:

1) Click on Manage >> Setup search tab
2) Click the Browse button and choose the folders.htx file in the BadBlue installation directory (usually BadBlue is installed to c:\program files\badblue\pe or \ee for Enterprise Edition)
3) Make sure the Share all files in this folder checkbox is NOT checked
4) Press the Share! button
5) Click on Manage >> Password-protect files
6) Select the folders.htx shared area
7) Press the Require user authentication button

Now users will be forced to log-in before seeing the folders tab and will only see the folders to which they have access.

Common Folders tab questions and answers

Problem: How can I invite friends or colleagues to visit a specific folder?

Solution: Use the Manage >> Invite friends to your PC menu to format an email message inviting a user to your PC. Simply add the name of the folder at the end of the hyperlink, for example:

http://jsmith.dyndns.org:8888/photos

to invite the user to the Photos folder.

Problem: How can I invite others to see my folder in slide-show format?

Solution: Use the Manage >> Invite friends to your PC menu to format an email message inviting a user to your PC. Simply add the name of the folder at the end of the hyperlink, for example:

http://jsmith.dyndns.org:8888/photos/?&filter=jpg&browse=slides.hts

to invite the user to the Photos folder. The /?&filter=jpg&browse=slides.hts phrase forces the folder to 'Slideshow mode' in which any JPG image files are displayed.

Question: What is a virtual directory?

Answer: A virtual directory is the same as a folder that you can define through the Manage >> Setup folders tab menu. A BadBlue shared folder is simply a virtual directory in classic web serving terms.

A virtual directory appears to be a real folder when accessing to a server. But it actually refers to a completely different area of the PC's hard disk or local network. For instance, BadBlue might be installed to:

c:\program files\badblue\pe\

but there might be a folder containing existing files at:

c:\my documents\my pictures\

BadBlue allows you to create a virtual directory with a specific name (say, photos) that refers to the existing folder. A user can then surf to your machine and reference the virtual directory through the name you have assigned, e.g.,

http://jsmith.dyndns.org:8888/photos

So, again, in classic web serving terms, a virtual directory is identical to a BadBlue shared folder that has been defined using the Manage >> Setup folders tab menu.
