Tutorial: Getting a free domain name

Step 1

Use your browser to visit DynDNS.org and then click on the "Sign up now" link at upper right.

Step 2

Fill in all required fields to create a user-name (not a domain-name but your DynDNS user-name), email address and password.

Important: remember to make a note of your DynDNS user-name and password as you will need them later.

Step 3

Check your email account and confirm your DynDNS account by clicking on the link.

Step 4

Logon to your DynDNS account using your DynDNS user-name and password from Step 2.

Step 5

Click on the Services tab (highlighted).

Step 6

Click on the Dynamic DNS link (highlighted).

Step 7

Click on the Add Host link (highlighted) to create a host-name for your PC.

Step 8

Fill in a host-name and select from one of the server names.

Note: consider the domain-name jsmith.dyndns.org.

jsmith is the host name that you choose yourself.

dyndns.org is a server name you choose from a list provided by DynDNS.

Make a note of your selections, then click the Add Host button.

Step 9

Back to BadBlue's Manage tab. Click on the 'Create a domain name for this PC' link on the Manage page.

Fill in the following fields:
  • Change 'Use dynamic DNS' to 'Yes'
  • Select the server-name you chose in step 8
  • Enter the host-name you chose in step 8
  • Enter your DynDNS user-name from step 2
  • Enter your DynDNS password from step 2
  • Press the 'Save Changes' button

You will have to wait several minutes to have DynDNS update its name list for external use.

Remember to check the Troubleshooting Guide if users have problems accessing your domain name.
